Movember!
For the first time ever, I am taking part in Movember this year with my cabinet colleagues.

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. In 2011, over 854,000 people around the world got on board, raising £79.3 million for the cause. Money is directed to programmes run directly by Movember and their men’s health partners, Prostate Cancer UK and the Institute of Cancer Research to fund the vital areas of awareness and education, survivorship and research.
The charity works really hard to change established habits and attitudes men have about their health, to educate men about the health risks they face, and to act on that knowledge, thereby increasing the chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.
You have to register online at movember.com with each Mo Bro starting on the 1st of Movember with a clean shaven face. For the entire month each Mo Bro must grow and groom a moustache. The rules include no joining of the mo to the sideburns (that’s considered a beard), no joining of the handlebars to the chin (that’s considered a goatee) and each Mo Bro must conduct himself like a true gentleman.
Labour councillors will be supported by female cabinet members who will take on the role of ‘Mo Sista’s’. A Mo Sista is described as an individual that is dedicated to supporting the Mo Bros in her life through their moustache growing journey; whether it be a friend, colleague, family member or partner. These inspirational women are committed to raising awareness of men's health issues and much needed funds for men's health along the way.
Mo Bro Councillor Harry Harpham, Deputy Leader of the Council and Movember instigator said:
“We are pleased to be able to support this campaign by becoming Mo Bros. As well as being a bit of fun it gives us the opportunity to highlight awareness of men’s health which is a very important and often unspoken about issue. I think the Movember campaign has done and is continuing to do a great job at changing attitudes and habits relating to men’s health around the world but there is still much to be done to catch up with the women’s health movement.

A New Politics
As a local ward Councillor and community activist giving people a voice is one of my top priorities. I want everyone to feel they have a stake in our society - politics is central to that.
